Book Review: How Do I Love Thee? by Jennifer Adams

Title: How Do I Love Thee?
Author: Jennifer Adams
Illustrator: Christopher Silas Neal
Publisher:  Balzer + Bray
Year: 2018
Ages: 4 – 8

Jennifer Adams transforms Elizabeth Barrett Browning’s renowned Sonnet 43 into a lovely children’s story in How Do I Love Thee? Little kids of diverse backgrounds celebrate their friendship while they play in nature. They have lots of fun outdoors through the passing of the seasons.

Christopher Silas Neal’s delicate illustrations show the kids playing outside in all kinds of weather, which l loved because it reminds me of the old days when kids spent plenty of their days outdoors. In a day and age when children are almost attached to screens, this children’s book is a breath of fresh air.

My daughter enjoyed it and learned the word thee is synonymous of the word you. She had fun interchanging these words while we read the story. I would recommend this book for children who are beginner readers because the lines are simple and meaningful. My favorite line was: “I love thee with all my smiles and tears.” This sentence struck a chord in my daughter, and she asked what it meant. I told her that it means to love someone in good and bad times, as I love her.
